Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google takes of how your pages behave for real visitors. They are not the biggest factor in where you rank, but they describe exactly the frustrations that make people leave a site, so they are worth understanding without the jargon.
The three measurements
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — how long until the main content is visible. Google wants this under 2.5 seconds. On small business sites the culprit is almost always a huge hero image or an autoplaying video.
Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — how quickly the page responds when someone taps a button or opens a menu. Target: under 200 milliseconds. Heavy scripts, chat widgets and tracking tags are the usual cause.
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — whether things jump around while loading, so the button you were about to tap moves. Target: under 0.1. Images without set dimensions, late-loading banners and web fonts that swap are typical causes.
Why an owner should care
The numbers describe experiences your customers have. A slow LCP is the blank screen while they wait. A bad INP is the menu that does nothing when tapped. A high CLS is the accidental tap on the wrong thing. Each one loses a percentage of visitors, quietly, every day.
Fixes that need no developer
- Compress every image before uploading, and stop uploading photos straight from a phone camera.
- Remove sliders and autoplay video from the top of the homepage.
- Delete plugins, widgets and tracking scripts you no longer use.
- Use one or two web fonts, not five.
Fixes that need a developer
Setting image dimensions so space is reserved, lazy-loading images below the fold, deferring non-essential scripts, and serving images in modern formats such as WebP. None are expensive on a small site.

Search Console shows Core Web Vitals for your site once it has enough traffic; PageSpeed Insights works on any single page immediately.
