How AI Search Decides Which Local Businesses to Mention

When someone asks Google's AI or ChatGPT for a recommendation, how does it choose? A plain explanation of what AI answers look for, and what a small business can realistically do about it.

A growing share of searches now end in an AI-written answer instead of a list of links: Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Copilot and others. When someone asks "who is a good physio in Box Hill", these systems name businesses. Owners naturally want to know how to be one of them. The honest answer is that nobody controls it, but the patterns are clear.

They look for a clear entity

AI systems build a picture of a business from every source they can read: your website, your Google Business Profile, directories, reviews, social pages, news mentions. When those sources agree — same name, same address, same services, same area — the system is confident about who you are. When they disagree, it hedges, or leaves you out.

They prefer plain, answerable content

An AI answer is assembled from text that already answers the question. A page that says "We are a family-owned physiotherapy clinic in Box Hill treating back pain, sports injuries and post-surgical rehab; initial consultations are $120 and we accept HICAPS" gives the system something to quote. A page that says "Your wellness journey starts here" does not.

They lean on reviews and third parties

Mentions from sources other than you carry weight: reviews, local directories, community pages, suppliers listing you as a stockist. Volume and recency of Google reviews in particular correlate strongly with being named.

They read structure

Headings that match real questions, FAQ sections, and schema markup that labels your business type, hours and service area all reduce guesswork. None is magic; together they make you legible.

What you can actually do

  1. Make every business detail identical everywhere it appears.
  2. Rewrite your homepage and service pages to state facts plainly: what, who, where, how much.
  3. Add a real FAQ answering the questions customers actually ask.
  4. Add structured data for your business and services.
  5. Build a steady flow of Google reviews.

What nobody can promise

No agency can guarantee a mention in any AI answer, or that a mention will persist. Anyone selling "AI ranking" as a guaranteed outcome is selling the same snake oil that "guaranteed #1 on Google" was. What can be done is to remove every reason for a system to be unsure about you. That is the whole of YINO's GEO diagnostic within search visibility.
